Upgrade to First Class

Since most Americans have stated that they plan to travel more in 2012, airplanes are going to become more and more packed. Therefore, many frequent fliers are hoping that they are able to get an upgrade to first class. Transfer America understands the frustration of being a loyal customer but not being appreciated. Many often wonder what it will take to be upgraded from economy to first class.

Paul Skrbec, Delta Airlines spokesman, answered the question by stating, “The IT system uses our published criteria to ensure that the best customers get the best seats. After that, and if there are still seats in the front of the airplane, our agents have the ability to upgrade as well. In these cases, it’s not unheard of for members of the active military to get a better seat if they can be identified in the gate area. But generally speaking, first-class seats go to Medallion customers and those who paid for first class.”

The same procedure is followed at the United and Continental airlines. The spokesperson said, “Procedures are automated to ensure customers have a consistent, fair upgrade experience. When space is available, we offer upgrades first to customers in the highest premier levels, taking into account the fares they paid.”

However, to those who aren’t frequent fliers there are some secrets and strategies to get yourself into first class. Many travelers have often asked the gate agents nicely for an upgrade, while others dress up nicely to impress the agents. Others have tried flirting with the agents or just volunteering to change seats so that a family can sit together.

The founder of JohnnyJet.com stated that the best way to receive an upgrade is to “be genuinely nice and bring a box of chocolates to the gate agents and flight attendants.”
